A wealthy American businessman was at a pier in a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman rowed up and docked. The fisherman stepped out of the boat carrying 2 large yellow-fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fine fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The fisherman replied “Only a little while.”
The American then asked “Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish? With the price of Tuna these day, you could make some REAL money!
The fisherman said “I have enough to support my family’s immediate needs.”
The American then said “Well – with more money, you could live the good life! How do you spend your time?”
The fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”
The American scoffed, “What a waste! You have talent! And those are some FINE looking fish! Listen, I am a Harvard MBA and I can help you. You should spend more time fishing and, with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, and your knowledge and skill of fishing, you could buy several boats! Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats! Then, instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell them directly to the processor! Next, you’d open your own cannery! You would control the product, processing, and distribution! You would have the world at your finger tips! You’re journey would take you out of this small village and whisk you off to Mexico City! Then on to LA! And eventually, you’d land in NYC! where you will run your expanding empire!”
The fisherman asked, “But senor, how long will all this take?”
To which the American replied, “15-20 years.”
“But what then, senor?” asked the fisherman.
The American laughed, and said, “That’s the best part! When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public! You’ll be so very rich, that the world would envy the very ground you walk on! You’d have hundreds of millions of dollars!”
“Millions, senor?” replied the fisherman. “Then what?”
“Then” the American said, “Then you would retire! You would move to a small coastal fishing village – someplace quiet and quaint – where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play guitar with your amigos.”
The fisherman smiled, touched the American’s shoulder gently, then walked away with his 2 fish.
